Legalisation is the procedure by which an official document, issued by a foreign public authority, is rendered legally valid in India.

  1. Official document issued by the public authorities of originating country. The most common documents are certificates of civil status (marriage, birth, and death certificates), diplomas, police clearance certificates and affidavits. These documents require only one legalisation (Apostille) by the Embassy / Embassy of India is required.
  2. Official document issued by the public authorities of Originating countries which are not a part of apostille convention, that document has not ratified the Apostille Convention: the procedure of additional legalisation is maintained. Subsequently, every official document issued by the public authorities of those countries has first to be legalised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then by the Embassy or Consulate of India from document originating country.
  3. Official document issued by the public authorities of Originating countries which is a part of apostille convention, that document has to be ratified the Apostille Convention: every official document issued by the public authorities of those countries has first to be legalised by the state department and followed by the apostille attestation from the originating country.
  4. Legalisation of other types of documents. Most common are medical certificates issued by licensed physicians (see list) and formal obligations signed by financial guarantors in the framework of some visa applications. In this case, the legalisation will be done directly at the Embassy or at one of the Consulates General, according to the place where the documents were issued.

Apostille on Educational Documents in India

Typically, authentication of depending on the certificate issued from the country, the process may vary for Apostille procedure. Apostille process can be done on all educational certificates except private certificates. Start over with university verification (Document issuance Authority verification) followed by Notarization and attestation from state and submitted to Ministry of External Affairs / Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Apostilled the certificate.

  • HRD process Starts with university verification from the respective University and followed by State Human Resource Department for certificate verification from respective State which is the initial stage of attestation.
  • After HRD we will submit the documents to Ministry of External Affairs / MOFA for verification. MOFA verifies its authenticity and attest the document.
  • Upon completing MOFA procedure will submit the certificate to Apostille for attestation.
  • SDM process starts with Notary public attestation from local Notary followed by Sub Divisional magistrate (SDM), after which MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) and finally submit the document to Apostille attestation.
